MILWAUKEE (WSAU-Wheeler News) -- A resolution to affirm the state’s right to secede from the union has been defeated.

The tea party-backed resolution was shot down by a voice vote, during a Wisconsin Republican convention in Milwaukee yesterday. In addition to secession rights, the resolution would also nullify federal laws.

Many state G-O-P lawmakers, including Governor Scott Walker, disagreed with the language of the resolution, saying it would fail in the Assembly. A letter sent to all delegates urged lawmakers to reject it.
