MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) -- Paying for this last winter’s bills is going to hurt our wallets for quite a while.
Our governments at the state and local level will be paying more of your tax money for services and repairs caused by the super cold weather. One agency that took a beating in the bank account is the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.
DOT officials are seeking an additional 27-point-3 million dollars on top of their budget. The department anticipates 16 million of that will be for additional maintenance and just over 11 million will replace the unprecedented amount of salt and sand used to treat highways.
The state hires counties to maintain state highways. The DOT is still receiving bills from counties for plowing and salting state roads this past winter.
