Cheese names melting trade talks with European Union

by

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WSAU) -- European cheesemakers are weighing in on a battle that could force Americans to learn new names for familiar products.

Trade talks are underway between the United States and the European Union, and one of the sticking points is what American cheese producers have called various varieties of cheese for generations.

Europeans want American producers to stop calling our cheese names like Parmesan and Feta. They claim American cheese is taking away from the original European brands named for their places of origin, like Parma, Italy.

Dairy producers all around the U.S. are fighting the European’s effort for force name changes, saying it would endlessly confuse consumers and cost millions in rebranding and marketing.
