WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) -- Extreme cold weather may tempt people to make bad decisions in an effort to keep their house warm. Lisa Prunty from Wisconsin Public Service says before it’s too late, take a walk around your house to inspect vents and meters.“Make sure that if there’s any snow covering any of the vents, that those vents are cleared because if they aren’t cleared, you could have some backup and end up with some carbon monoxide issues in your home.”

When you are near the gas and the electric meter, look up. Prunty says icicles can be dangerous, and can damage your energy source. “If there’s any icicles around the gas meter, if those would break off, it could hit the meter and break the meter.”

One of the biggest mistakes people make during extreme cold is using the wrong appliance for the job. Prunty says you should never use your oven or broiler as a heat source, but especially never ever use your barbeque grill indoors... even if it is gas. “Do not use that to heat your home. If you need to find elsewhere to go, find someplace to go if your house isn’t warm, but definitely do not use any of those ways to heat your home. Bundle up. Add more blankets. Add more fleece and sweatshirts, but be safe and just use your natural gas or electric heat.”
