GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Would you like to see Pope Francis visit Northeast Wisconsin?
Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt would, and he's formally invited the pontiff to make a pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help in Champion.
The Catholic Church validated an appearance by the Virgin Mary in the mid-1800s at the rural Brown County shrine in 2010.
In the letter, Schmitt wrote that the community is filled with a generous heart for its connection to the Virgin Mary. The Mayor also said that a papal visit to the Green Bay area would be a blessing that would lift the lives of the people who live here.
This invitation is to extend Pope Francis' possible visit to the United States in 2015. The Pope has shown an interest in attending the 8th World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia.
