Residents in Kewaunee urged to keep water running through faucets

by

KEWAUNEE, WI (WTAQ) - Home and business owners in the Kewaunee area are being asked to leave their faucets running.

The Kewaunee Water Utility says all customers should run their water in a pencil lead size stream at one faucet. It’s in an effort to prevent water pipes from freezing.

The measure is needed due to the cold weather driving the frost deeper into the ground than normal.

“The frost depth on a normal year is down two to three feet. This year, we got frost in Kewaunee that’s pushing down 5, 5 1/2 feet. Another problem is that our mains are only buried at 5 to 5 1/2 feet,” Kewaunee Public Works Director Charlie Petersen told FOX 11.

Kewaunee has had about a dozen reports of frozen pipes since Saturday. And if residents and businesses don’t turn their faucets on, they worry that number will continue to rise.

City officials say that they understand running water constantly isn't cheap, and adjustments will be made on future bills to ensure that residents and businesses don’t incur these additional costs.
