MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Wisconsin's public school choice program began Monday.

It's better known as the "Open Enrollment" program. It allowed almost 49,000 public school students to attend other public schools outside their districts in the current school year.

Parents wishing to send their kids to other districts can apply by April 30th -- and if there's room, they're likely to get in.

Parents will be notified by June 6th whether their applications will be approved.

The public school choice program began in the fall of 1998 in Wisconsin. Almost 2,500 youngsters attended other districts in the first year.
