After twelve years together, The Mars Volta is breaking up.  Frontman Cedric Bixler-Zavala revealed the news via Twitter on Wednesday, tweeting , "I can't sit here and pretend any more. I no longer am a member of Mars Volta."

In a series of tweets that followed, Zavala writes that he tried to “get a full scale North American tour going for [2012’s] Noctourniquet but [guitarist] Omar [ Rodríguez-López ] did not want to.”  The singer also cites López’s new side project, Bosnian Rainbows , as another reason for the breakup.  Zavala adds that he will be moving forward with a solo album, but did not give any indication as to when it will be released.

The Mars Volta released six albums during their career and won a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance for “Wax Simulacra” from their 2008 album The Bedlam in Goliath .
