One Republican joins Democrats on school funding issue

MADISON, WI (WSAU) -  The Governor’s proposed budget is expected next month, and majority republicans are pushing for an income tax cut. One Republican is joining Democrats to seek dollars for one specific reason.

Republican Senator Luther Olsen of Ripon is calling for a $100 million increase in school aid the first year of the budget and another $200 million the second. Most Democrats are supporting big increases in school aid after Wisconsin had its largest aid cut ever.

Two years ago, the state was in the red, but now there appears to be a surplus. Expect both parties to spend time debating how to spend it or save it during this session.

Republicans have a large enough majority to both pass the income tax cuts and block the additional school spending if they choose to.
