UNION GROVE, WI (WTAQ) - A Wisconsin World War II veteran has finally received his Prisoner of War Medal.
91-year-old Dale Ellington fought back tears as his wife pinned the medal on her husband’s jacket at a Union Grove Veterans home on Sunday.
The U.S. military did not recognize Ellington as a POW for seven decades because Switzerland, the country who imprisoned him for 75 days, was not an enemy combatant.
While the country was neutral during the war, a commandant where Ellington was imprisoned at was considered a Nazi sympathizer and later convicted of war crimes.
