A Perfect Circle has a hit on its hands with “By and Down,” a previously unreleased song the group played live since 2011 but which can now be found on the band’s greatest hits collection, Three Sixty . Guitarist Billy Howerdel says the music for the track was inspired by playing around with his son, who was three years old at the time he wrote it.
“He was playing piano, banging around on the keyboard, and I was just trying to play a melody to help have him follow along with…and the melody of 'By and Down' just came out of that,” he tells Rock Revolt Magazine . “I hit record on my phone, recorded the beginnings of that, the chord structure, kicked my three-year old out of the room, probably put him in front of The Wiggles or something like that on TV, and got to work on the song.”
You’ll get the chance to hear the song performed live if you attend frontman Maynard James Keenan ’s 50th birthday party concert, which is set to take place on May 10 at The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, CA. The show will feature performances by A Perfect Circle and Keenan’s other band, Puscifer , as well as a set by Failure , who are reuniting especially for the event.
