MARINETTE, WI (WTAQ) - Police in Marinette say a standoff that lasted nearly three hours forced the evacuation of Marinette High School Monday morning.

Authorities say a call came in around 6:30 a.m. from someone in Upper Michigan who was concerned about posts a Marinette man had made on a social networking website. The 28-year-old said he wanted to harm himself, and also mentioned a gun.

Police arrived at his home at 2000 Pierce Avenue, which is across the street from the high school. The man was on the second floor, got in touch with him by telephone and kept him on the line throughout the standoff.

Due to the proximity of the standoff and the high school, police decided to evacuate between 600 and 700 students to the UW-Marinette fieldhouse.

Around 9:20, the man agreed to come downstairs and surrender to police. He cooperated the whole time and there were no weapons found in areas he had access to.

The man was then taken to Bay Area Medical Center. No charges are pending and police are treating the matter as a medical issue.

Students were back in school around 10 a.m.
