Eddie Vedder performed at a fundraising event for President Obama at a South Tampa, Florida, home on Thursday.
According to The Hollywood Reporter , the Pearl Jam frontman played four songs on a mandolin: "Rise," from his Into the Wild soundtrack; "Without You," from his solo disc Ukulele Songs ; James Taylor 's "Millworker"; and the Neil Young classic "Rockin' in the Free World."
Vedder also addressed Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney 's now-famous remark that 47 percent of voters will back Obama no matter what and that they do not pay federal income taxes. Vedder said, "It's very upsetting to hear a presidential candidate be so easily dismissive of such a ginormous amount of the population."
Vedder recalled how, in his pre-rock superstar days, he worked as a supervisor at a petroleum company, allowing him to earn money to pay for guitars and microphones. He said, "For me, it all began with that ability to get the proper training for a decent job."
The fundraiser Thursday pulled in 1.7 million dollars.
