SHEBOYGAN, WI (WTAQ) - A man who drowned in Sheboygan while trying to save his 10-year-old grandson has been identified as 60-year-old Karl Schmidt of Freedom.
The incident happened Sunday afternoon in Lake Michigan.
Police said Schmidt went into the water to help his grandson after the child swam too far from the shore.
Others on the beach pulled the boy to safety – and they noticed a few moments later that the grandfather had not resurfaced.
Burton Hathaway of Racine, who was in Sheboygan for the Dairyland Surf Classic, pulled Schmidt from the water and started giving him CPR.
Rescuers took him to a Sheboygan hospital, where he died.
