SHAWANO, WI (WTAQ) - A man accused of killing his father has agreed to a plea deal.
Prosecutors say Joshua Johnson shot, beat and stabbed his father, Donald Johnson, at the father's home in Birnamwood back in February. Joshua pled not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect.
A trial has been scheduled for Tuesday, but instead a plea hearing will take place.
According to Jared Redfield, Johnson's attorney, a plea of guilty or no contest is expected to be entered on the homicide charge. Prosecutors and the defense agree that Johnson should then be found not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect due the son's psychological problems, Redfield said.
If that happens, Johnson would be committed to a mental health a facility, instead of being sent to prison. A sentencing hearing likely will be scheduled on Tuesday for a later date.
