GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Green Bay’s interim Police Chief is looking to free up police officers from responding to low priority calls. 

Tom Molitor is pitching a plan that would have community service interns respond to what he calls customer service type calls involving reports of vandalism, graffiti or a maybe a car break-in.  Those types of calls number upwards of around 15,000 a year.

Molitor says it's about improving customer service, because officers can’t always respond to low priority calls in a timely matter. Most low priority calls only involve filing a report and don't require immediate police action like a domestic abuse call or traffic accident. 

On average, the Green Bay Police Department responds to around 80,000 calls a year. 

The model is similar to other municipalities like Appleton and Fond du Lac.

With the extra duties placed on the shoulders of CSIs, Molitor and the Community Service Department are requesting an additional five new interns for next year’s budget.
