On Friday, Voodoo Music + Arts Experience festival organizers announced that Metallica would be filling in for Green Day , who dropped out of the festival so frontman Billie Joe Armstrong can continue his treatment for substance abuse. Guitarist Kirk Hammett says that the band jumped at the chance to offer support to Green Day, especially Armstrong.
“We got a message a couple days ago asking us to fill in for Green Day because…I guess Billie Joe is having some issues,” Hammett tells ABC News Radio. “We talked about it and we love Billie Joe, we love Green Day, and we’d do anything to help them out and we said ‘Sure, let’s help out our friends in their time of need.’”
Metallica will now be headlining the second day of the festival on October 27. The band joins previously announced headliners Jack White and Neil Young & Crazy Horse .
