MILWAUKEE (WTAQ) - A physicist who was born in Milwaukee was named Tuesday morning as a co-winner of the Nobel Prize for Physics.

David Wineland joins Serge Haroche of France in winning the annual award.

WTMJ Radio said Wineland was born in Wisconsin. Both winners are 68.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said Wineland and Haroche both paved the way for new experiments in quantum physics, by developing ways to observe quantum particles without destroying them.

The academy said Wineland and Haroche created “ground-breaking methods” that have allowed scientists to take the first steps in building a new super-computer based on quantum physics. And the same research led to the development of extremely precise clocks which may lead to a new standard of time in the future.

Wineland is now a physicist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Boulder Colorado. Haroche is with the College de France and another scientific institute in Paris.
