Veteran lawmaker Krusick launches write-in campaign for Assembly

MILWAUKEE (WTAQ) - A 29-year veteran of the Wisconsin Assembly will try to stay in office by waging a write-in campaign next month.

Milwaukee Democrat Peggy Krusick has registered with state elections officials as a write-in.

She’ll run against fellow Democrat Daniel Riemer, who got two-thirds of the vote when he defeated Krusick in their August 14th primary.

Krusick has not talked about her campaign to reporters. But the Journal Sentinel says she’s been handing out fliers, and she has a Web site that promotes what she calls her “independent track record.”

The day after the primary, the group Wisconsin Progress took credit for Krusick’s defeat, as well as the loss of her fellow Milwaukee Assembly incumbent Jason Fields.

Krusick was targeted for her opposition to abortion – while Fields went against his party line by supporting private school vouchers for low-income children. Wisconsin Progress said it recruited Riemer and two other primary winners for legislative seats in Milwaukee.

Riemer called Krusick’s write-in campaign “unfortunate.” He said it would force him to wage his own campaign, instead of helping other Democrats.

There are no Republicans running for the seat.
