ASHWAUBENON, WI (WTAQ) - Beginning next year, the Green Bay-area will play host to the WIAA state girls basketball tournament.

PMI Entertainment Group, which operates the Resch Center, wants to help tip-off the tourney with a big event, which was the focus of a meeting Wednesday.

"The community leaders that were here today are very supportive of the idea and trying to embrace the community of Green Bay," WIAA Associate Director Deb Hauser said. "I'm just thrilled with their enthusiasm, their support and the sharing of ideas was just awesome."

Officials say it's shaping up to be a motivational-speaking event, possibly held at Lambeau Field.

"We have the Packers that are willing to help support us and we have community leaders to support us," says PMI COO Cora Haltaufderheid. "So we want to think of an event to start the tournament out."

Plans are in the works for a "kickoff" event that would begin Wednesday night or Thursday morning.

Details for the event aren't final yet. The meeting at the Resch Center included representatives from the WIAA, PMI, current and former girls basketball players and at least one current girls basketball coach.

The girls state basketball tournament for the 2012-13 season runs March 14-16.
