DE PERE, WI (WTAQ) - Midwest Sports Events says the man that died at this weekend’s triathlon event in Sherwood had a history of heart disease and died from a heart attack in the water. High Cliff Triathlon Race Director Gloria West says 42-year-old David Witmer from La Grange, IL died from a heart attack and went down into the water before emergency personnel could pull him into the boat. The medical examiner’s autopsy was expected to be finished by Tuesday, but WTAQ could not confirm the cause of death before the office closed. Witmer’s death is the third in four years at events organized by Midwest Sports Events based in De Pere. The other two drown during separate events in 2009. Midwest Sports Events has been organizing events for over 25-years.
