SAN FRANSICO, CA (WTAQ) - A World War II veteran on his way to Pearl Harbor died in flight Thursday. He was with a group of 20 veterans heading to Hawaii with the Northeast Wisconsin Old Glory Honor Flight. WBAY-TV reports 89-year-old Sparta native Mark Schaitel died in flight. The plane was diverted to San Francisco. A team of medical care takers traveled with the group of aging veterans.Schaitel served aboard the USS Boggs and survived the surprise morning attack in 1941. The group was visiting sites like the USS Arizona Memorial. For some, it was the first trip back Pearl Harbor.
