APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) - A veteran Appleton police officer is returning to work after an internal review showed he was justified in shooting and killing a man with a gun.
Sgt. Gregory Pieper shot 61-year-old Keith Gabriel three times on August 10th.
Police were responding to call about illegal fireworks at Gabriel’s home.
When Pieper first arrived Gabriel was holding a gun, he radioed for back-up and then ordered Gabriel to drop his weapon. He refused by saying “shoot me” and began to lift the .45-calibur Colt handgun at Sgt. Pieper.
The Outagamie District Attorney also reviewed the case after the Green Bay Police Department investigated and said Pieper act properly.
Back in 2000, Gabriel had a run in with a city employee and threatened to chase away any public employee with his gun if they stepped foot on his property.
