U.S. long-distance swimmer Diana Nyad starts her attempt to swim to Florida from Havana

MIAMI (Reuters) - U.S. long-distance swimmer Diana Nyad has decided to end later on Sunday an attempt to swim from Cuba to Florida after being stung overnight in the face and eyes by jellyfish, her team said.

"After more than 40 hours of swimming and two Portuguese Man-of-War stings, Diana Nyad decided to end her swim today ...," a posting on Twitter and her website said. "But, in unique and characteristic fashion, Nyad decided to complete this day."

Nyad, 62, was treated by doctors on a specially equipped boat accompanying her after she was stung on Saturday night well into an attempt to cross the 103-mile stretch (166-km) between the Caribbean island and the United States.
