GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - A new court specially designed for veterans is making its debuting Brown County. It will help criminal offenders who are military veterans get treatment over prison. According to a press release from Judge Kendall Kelley, who will be in charge of the court-treatment program, it will connect select veterans offenders to special treatment, recovery or rehab services designed for them. The new special court for veterans will help tackle the invisible wounds of mental health issues that turns into criminal behavior. Executive Director of Human Services for Brown County Brian Shoup says the timing is right, because there are many more returning vets with the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan wrapping up. “Brown County has a historically has always been there to support our veterans.” Shoup said. The standards of the program are much more rigid than a regular offender. The program standards will be typically higher in accountability, not less because they are veterans. The goal is to grow the Northeast Wisconsin Veterans Treatment Court veteran court regionally.
