DORR, MI (WHTC News) - A Dorr homeowner had a bad day yesterday, and things could get worse.
At least Michael Winger is alive today, but his golden retriever died when his home in the 17 hundred block of 143rd Avenue apparently exploded and burst into flames. Authorities believe that Winger was attempting to thaw out some frozen pipes in the basement when heat from a blow torch ignited fireworks that were stored nearby, causing the explosion and fire. Winger was able to escape the dwelling, and no injuries were reported among the crews from three departments that brought the fire under control in about 90 minutes.
Federal Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents were called to the scene, and there is some question as to the legality of the fireworks that Winger had possessed. Any possible charges will be decided by the Allegan County Prosecutor’s Office once investigators submit their report.
