The Illinois State Police has agreed settle a lawsuit by a former death row inmate paying$2.5 million to Gordon Randy Steidl who spent 17 years in prison for killing a young couplein Paris, Illinois before a judge freed him because of faulty evidence. The settlement comesafter the State Police had spent over $3.7 million to fight the law suit. Steidl’s lawyers see thesettlement as state investigators finally admitting they had a hand in wrongfully sending Steidlto prison, but State Police claim different reasons for settling.
