PEWAUKEE, Wis. (WTAQ) - A former police officer in Pewaukee is getting $180,000 to settle a lawsuit and a discrimination complaint he filed.

Robert Kraemer’s lawyer is getting $120,000, making the total settlement $300,000.

Kraemer said former Police Chief Gary Bach re-assigned him and threatened to fire him, because he told the chief to stop using vulgar language when talking about women and minorities.

Officials investigated the chief’s behavior, and he was disciplined in 2007. Kraemer said the chief retaliated by assigning him to a community service post.

Bach resigned in ‘08, amid allegations that he wrongly told employees the city was about to fire them. Kraemer lost his job at the end of 2009, when the Pewaukee police force was disbanded and Waukesha County sheriff’s deputies began patrolling the city.

Kraemer said he filed his complaints because he wanted the chief’s retaliation to stop – and it didn’t. He said it’s important to tell the truth. And he learned that, “the recipient of the truth has to want to hear it.”

Pewaukee’s insurance company is paying the settlement costs. Mayor Scott Klein said the insurer negotiated the amount.
