APPLETON, Wis. (WTAQ) - A domestic disturbance call leads to a fatal shooting involving Appleton police.  

It happened at a home at 11 Hollyhock Court around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday. 

Officers responding opened fire on 35-year-old Armando Aponte.

"The man rushed out of the residence towards the officers with some edged weapons," says Sgt. Pat DeWall of the Appleton Police Department. "The officers were forced to fire their service weapons to stop the threat."

Those edged weapons were swords, according to police. One woman and 4 kids inside the home were able to escape unharmed. 

The two officers involved in the shooting have been identified as Lt. Carlos del Plaine and Officer Joseph Lidbury. They've been placed on paid leave while the Green Bay Police Department investigates. 

It's the first time in 24 years lethal force had to be used by Appleton officers.
