New rules to limit spread of emerald ash borer

by

UNDATED (WSAU) – When you pack your car for the Memorial Day weekend, the DNR wants you to leave the emerald ash borer out of your belongings.

The pest is easily spread through firewood and has been discovered as close as Green Bay. But the DNR says it only takes two to three years for an infestation to appear and it's only a matter of time before EAB is found in central Wisconsin.

Starting next week, campers in state parks-and-forests will have new restrictions for bringing in firewood to prevent the spread of the insect.

Starting on Tuesday, any firewood that’s brought into the state-owned camping sites must be gathered or bought within 25 miles. The limit is currently 50 miles. Exceptions will be made for firewood from Wisconsin sellers that is certified as being treated.

You can find more information about how to stop the spread at www.EmeraldAshBorer.Wi.gov
