Opposition To Closing Fire Station Grows

Audio Clip (Download MP3)

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (WHBL) - During Wednesday’s Public Protection and Safety Committee meeting, the concept of closing a fire station in Sheboygan was again debated.

The agenda originally was to address the proposed resolution lifting the hiring freeze to allow the fire department to fill eight vacancies with four firefighter/paramedics. However, during discussion of that proposal closing a fire station, namely the Southside station, was tossed around. Alderman Eric Rindfleisch spoke out against shutting that station as it would leave only four firefighter/paramedics to protect the portion of the city that is below the Sheboygan River. Rindfleisch could soon have an ally in his district should Susie Lessard be elected next month to the seat being vacated by current Council member Jeanne Kliejunas. Not only is Lessard against closing the Southside station, she is vehemently against closing any station in the city.

The Committee did recommend the proposal lifting the hiring freeze be sent on to the Common Council, which will take up the measure at their meeting this Monday.
