1984 is where we head tomorrow for our Wozz 9 @ 9 after Bob & Tom. The year started off with a feel good story about Clara Peller, an 80+ retiree. While doing nails on a commercial shoot, she was offered a job as a TV pitchwoman.
On January 10, 1984, Wendy's first aired their commercial about competitor called "Big Bun". Three nice old ladies are served huge hamburger buns with a tiny little hamburger. Two of the ladies are talking when retired manicurist Clara Peller, interrupts with the soon to be famous "Where's the Beef!" Almost overnight, the phrase "Where's the beef" was everywhere. The little old lady was on her way to giving Wendy's a 31% increase in sales in just 5 weeks. $945 million bought a lot of beef. Clara signed on with Prego spaghetti sauce after that for a campaign to pitch their meat sauce by exclaiming “I found it!”
Wendy’s fired the nice old lady. They stated: "Clara can find the beef only in one place, and that is Wendy's”. It took Wendy’s seven years to recover from the backlash. For some people this story may serve as an example of Karma. For me ...it just made me hungry for 9 great songs for one great year...1984.
