Thursday Wozz Nine at Nine Posted June 30, 2010 by David Louis

The next time you use your i-pod or mp3 player imagine shelling out $200 for a Sony Walkman. You couldn’t carry around 100 songs unless you had a backpack full of casssettes. 1979 is where we land the Vista Cruiser for Wednesdays Nine at Nine. The first modern Bungee Jumping took place in the U.K. I wonder what non modern bungee jumping was. Maybe just a rope tied to your leg? In between the disco, new wave and emerging punk rock, there was “The Wall” and In Through the Out Door”. We’ll grab nine great songs from one great year, 1979, the year I graduated High School, tomorrow at nine on Wozz.

In August of 1970 the largest ever rock festival was held on the Isle of Wight with 600,000 concert goers and  some of the biggest names in music including The Doors, Jimi Hendrix Chicago, Jethro Tull, Emerson, Lake and Palmer and The Who. Less than four months earlier,Paul McCartney announced that the Beatles had disbanded so a festival full of great artists and bands served as a reminder that even though the sixties had passed, some of the experiences and feelings that were shared were still around. Unfortunately, in less than five weeks, Jimmy Hendrix & Janis Joplin would both be lost to drug overdoses. It was painfully apparent for some that The 60’s were over.Tomorrow after Bob & Tom we’ll feature nine great songs that kicked off the seventees on Wozz’s Nine at Nine.

Wozz Tuesday 9 @ 9 Posted June 28, 2010 by David Louis

1980 may have kicked off the decade of decadence or maybe its events pushed us in that direction. Mount St. Helens erupted in may and Ronald Reagan was nominated for President in July. We lost AC/Dc’s Bon Scott in February, Steve McQueen in March and Led Zeppelin’s John Bonham in September. And then the unthinkable. John Lennon murdered in December. It’s no wonder so many people watched Dallas to see who shot JR. Everybody need a diversion. Music was the glue that helped us get through 1980 and we’ll grab 9 great songs from 1980 tomorrow after Bob & Tom for Wozz’s 9@9.

(Just Like) Starting Over

Wozz Friday Nine at Nine Posted June 24, 2010 by David Louis

1982 is the year E.T. phoned home which made sense since the year seemed engulfed in technology news. It was also the year of Disney’s computer themed movie “Tron”. The first CD players were sold in Japan. Even Time Magazine’s “Man of the Year” was a computer. Of course it wasn’t all about computers in 82’. Heavy rock was enjoying a resurgence with Judas Priest cracking the top 20 pop chart and Ozzy Osbourne was on top of the world except for the unfortunate bat incident (tastes like chicken … raw chicken.  In between “Thriller” and “Asia” there were some great albums and we’ll pick 9 songs from those for Wozz’s 1982 Nine at Nine right after Bob & Tom

Wednesday WOZZ Nine @ Nine Posted June 22, 2010 by David Louis

1977 was the year we elected Jimmy Carter President. He gave pardons to Vietnam draft dodgers and gave Panama back its Canal. We had our first Space Shuttle flight and the first Quadraphonic concert in London (Pink Floyd) and Donna Summer is credited for sparking what would become the Synthesizer era with “I Feel Love”. Star Wars opens in theaters, Roots was on TV and the oil started flowing in the Trans Alaskan Oil Pipeline. We lost “The King” on August 16th and The Police, Van Halen and The Cars got their first record deal. A nationwide Gallop poll named Kiss the Hottest band in America.

Exactly who did they call? Nine great songs from 1977 tomorrow after Bob & Tom

Wozz Fday Nine at Nine 1984 Posted June 17, 2010 by David Louis

1974. Who can forget the television event when Captain married Tennille … or was it Peter Wolf married Faye Dunaway? Maybe I’m thinking of the Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour. 1974 played with the space-time continuum which bounced us back & forth between 50’s, the 60’s and 70’s. “Rock Around The Clock” even climbed the charts again. The reason for the Dr. Who trips was a TV show that took advantage of a popular movie a half a year earlier…American Graffiti” and “Happy Days”. Sha Na Na’s appearance at Woodstock 5 years earlier helped fuel the nostalgia flame. Those of us not caught up in the  Doo-Wop had a year filled with great music. The birth of Bad Company and Kiss, 461 Ocean Boulevard, Not Fragile and so many more. We’ll roll with 9 great songs from one great year, 1974, tomorrow after Bob & Tom.

Wozz Thursday Nine at Nine 1984 Posted June 16, 2010 by David Louis

1984 is where we head tomorrow for our Wozz 9 @ 9 after Bob & Tom. The year started off with a feel good story about Clara Peller, an 80+ retiree. While doing nails on a commercial shoot, she was offered a job as a TV pitchwoman.

On January 10, 1984, Wendy's first aired their commercial about competitor called "Big Bun". Three nice old ladies are served huge hamburger buns with a tiny little hamburger. Two of the ladies are talking when retired manicurist Clara Peller, interrupts with the soon to be famous "Where's the Beef!" Almost overnight, the phrase "Where's the beef" was everywhere. The little old lady was on her way to giving Wendy's a 31% increase in sales in just 5 weeks. $945 million bought a lot of beef. Clara signed on with Prego spaghetti sauce after that for a campaign to pitch their meat sauce by exclaiming “I found it!”

Wendy’s fired the nice old lady. They stated:  "Clara can find the beef only in one place, and that is Wendy's”. It took Wendy’s seven years to recover from the backlash. For some people this story may serve as an example of Karma. For me ...it just made me hungry for 9 great songs for one great year...1984.

Where were you in 72'? 1972 was the year of “Layla”, VW Beetles and American Pie. It was the year we said goodbye to Creedence, The MC5 and the Velvet Underground and hello to The Eagles and Aerosmith. People were lining up for “The Godfather”. The cool kids were listening to Wishbone Ash, Chuck Berry was doing his My Ding a Ling” thing and we saw why Edgar Winter Only Comes Out at Night. Right after Bob & Tom we’ll have 9 great songs from 1972 on Wozz’s Nine @ Nine.
